News from November 27, 2011
SOME VESTRY
NOTES. The vestry met Sunday (November 20) and approved a number of year-end items such as approving the budget
for 2012, hearing a report on the new boiler, making plans for the annual Study
of Mutual Ministry. Canon Wilson, canon
for congregational development will meet with the leadership team on Saturday,
December 3 from 9am to 1pm. It was reported at the meeting that the church is
running a $27,000 deficit for the year, almost all it caused by the failure of Alianza
to pay $80,000 in back rent. The Vestry
voted to begin eviction proceedings and to find a new tenant for the space.
You and Your
Body, a Sunday discussion at 11 am on November
13, led by Dustin Vye, was a big hit. Seventeen people
attended and the energy level was the highest ever. Dustin took questions and
comments on diet, training routines and ended with a five minute exercise that
had people jumping out of their seats.
The follow-up will be three nights of exercise in December. (see
announcement in this newsletter)
FUND RAISING
COMMITTEE was very pleased with the
results of the New Amsterdam Singer’s concert last Sunday (November 20). Around
$1000 was raised with the largest audience ever. The NAS is known for its courage to perform
contemporary works that can challenge both the chorus and the audience. The
PARISH LIFE COMMITTEE provided
refreshments before and after the concert, not just for the chorus, but for the
whole audience.
HAPPY NEW YEAR.
We are not talking about January 1, the beginning of the secular calendar, but
Sunday, November 27, which is the First Sunday of Advent, the beginning of the
Christian Year. Make a special effort to
come to church during Advent as you prepare for the coming of Christ at Christmas.
THE AFTER SCHOOL
PROGRAM has finished its first trimester of the season with 18 kids attending
classes in art, drama, dance, and lots of music. Eight of the children sang at
both masses last Sunday presenting much more demanding songs than are usually
sung by this age group. They also rang
bells. The program begins its next
semester in January. The program is free thanks to a grants from Trinity, Wall
street and Episcopal Charities.
THE NOMINATING
COMMITTEE is hard at work finishing up the process of lining four nominees for
Vestry. The nominees will be presented to the congregation before the Annual Meeting,
January 8. (Mark your calendar: only one mass at 11 am on January 8, followed
by the meeting.)
COSECHA
(Harvest) has completed a seven month
training program and is now in a new phase of operation. With the large number of visitors coming to
Holyrood, the Cosecha team is now action oriented, making contacts, recruiting
people for special events, calling and sending notes to lapsed members, and
helping with pastoral issues. The group meets on Wednesdays after the 6pm Santa
Misa. Usually around 10 people participate and everyone is invited to join in
at any time.
FOR THE RECORD.
There are plenty of press releases about the election of the new bishop
coadjutor, but we should record here that Andrew Dietsche is our new Coadjutor.
Greetings were sent to him from Holyrood wishing him well. He has been the
Canon Pastor of the Diocese and knows our congregations well.
WEDDING. Jose
Espinal and Carmen Polanco will be married at Holyrood on Wednesday, November
23 at the 6pm mass.
Pledging for
2012. Members
of the congregation are asked to take a pledge card and fill it out with some
indication of what they plan to give to the church during 2012. This is standard practice in the Episcopal
Church and gives the Vestry a guide on how to use the 2012 budget. Pledge cards
may be put into the small envelopes provided and given to the one of the
priests. This information is
confidential. Only the person recording the pledges knows what the amount
is. The clergy do not know, nor does
anyone else. Let’s make 2012 the year when ALL members pledge, regardless of
the amount.
-------------------------------------DECEMBER-------------------------
THE OCCASSIONAL
CHOIR sings Sunday, December 4
at the 10 am mass, and on December 24, 6pm, for Christmas Eve.
Fitness At

Monday, December 5, Dustin Vye will be leading a one hour exercise class. It
will continue for now the next two Mondays (December 12 and 19). Bring a mat (yoga like), a large bath towel
and enter the parish hall through the W179th Street entrance. 6:30-pm to 7:30
pm. $10 donation each class. Dustin is a profession personal trainer. Come and get in shape in time for Chtristmas.
The Holiday
Bazaar
is Saturday, December 10 from 10 am to 4pm. Parish organizations are asked to have their
own tables and to sell something with proceeds going to the church. Any
question can be addressed to Velva Wright, the Fund Raising Committee chair.
Youngish
People’s Group. Spurred
on by a grant from the Diocesan Congregational Development Commission and the
work of Phil Puthumana, a special get together will be held for young adults of
the parish and community on Sunday afternoon, December 11 at 4pm in the
church. There will be special music
performed by participants, refreshments, and a chance to get to know one
another. This is an attempt to gather
together people in the parish and community to eventually explore possibilities
of an ongoing group. Everyone is welcome.
Advent/Christmas
Party For Everyone is in the works for Sunday, December 18
at 1pm. The Parish Life Committee, Erma Moore, Chair, is planning refreshments,
decorating of the church, music, and fun for everyone, young and old. Speak with Erma about the plans and maybe you
can help. This is a chance for the
entire community of Holyrood/Santa Cruz to come together.
Cornerstone
Chorale
will be presenting a concert at Holyrood on Sunday, December 4 at 4pm.
Cornerstone, under the direction of Richard Stout, is our Artist in Residence
group. Come out and support them. Better yet, bring a friend.
Christmas at
Holyrood. Christmas Eve is Saturday, December 24 and
there will be one mass at 6pm in English and Spanish. There will be special activities for the
children. Christmas day falls on Sunday
but because of the Holy Day of Christmas, Sunday is not observed. Christmas is one of the three great feasts of
the Christian year, and the mass on the eve, Saturday night, is our principal celebration. There will be a low mass in English and
Spanish, without music, on Christmas Day, Sunday, December 25 for those who
cannot make the Christmas Eve Mass.

Toy at Front of Church: Child Friendly Church - Juguetes en frente de la Iglesia
When
you come into Holyrood these days, you will to your right a collection
of toys. These are not for you if you are reading this. They are for the
under five set. Holyrood is a child friendly church. Parents are
encouraged to bring their infants to church, and to feel free to roam
around the church during the mass and use the toys. If a child starts
screaming, you can ways step outside and come right back when the storm
is over.
We
are in the process of moving rooms around to make better use of our
space. The secretary's office will be in the room right off the side
aisle of the church. The former secretary's office will be turned into a
library/conference room, the former priest's office is now a classroom.
The
priest will use the sacristy for office work. And we hope you have seen
the newly renovated Sotolongo Room. All rooms will be used by all of
our groups throughout the week.
